Using Quantitative and Qualitative Methods within One Study

Abstract

This paper discusses mixed methodology which can be utilized in different stages of the research (Ponto, 2004). The paper also provides a discussion on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The strengths and weaknesses of using nomothetic and idiographic approaches are critically debated and issues concerning reliability and validity of mixed measures are also discussed. An argument is put forward that quantitative and qualitative methods can be successfully employed within the same study and that this should be considered as strength rather than a weakness.
