Abstract

Contemporary media, including film, react strongly to the global terrorism phenomenon. Terrorism has been one ofthe most important themes ofAmerican cinema for many years and it can be found in action and drama films. The 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States have had a significant impact on raising the issue ofterrorism. In the aftermath of 9/11 the “war on terrorism” has become an integral part ofthe international security policy. The 2003 invasion ofIraq wasjustified by, inter alia, a cooperation between Saddam Hussein’s regime and terrorist networks. In practice the military intervention has become the catalyst for the pathological phenomenon development. Kathryn Bigelow’s Oscar-winning film “The Hurt Locker” realistically depicts the specific terrorist actions in a destabilized Iraq from the perspective of an elite U.S. Army bomb-disposal team.
