dc.description.abstract The main problem considered is analysis of developmental changes in the parents or caregivers of a child with Down syndrome. Of particular interest is if any specific individual development of the parents takes place. On the basis of their own studies, the authoresses have found that the birth of a child with Down syndrome usually is a turning event in individual development of its parents often stimulating them to the following: (1) Revision of situations, events and problems following from assuming as central the good and dignity of another human being. (2) Undertaking activities directed to improvement of the level of their own competence, extension of knowledge and gaining of new abilities allowing a more effective dealing with the difficult family situation. In general, developmental changes observed in the parents of a disabled child testify to their intellectual, emotional and social development, leading to a more effective adaptation to the demanding family situation. en_US
