dc.description.abstractThe present article has been devoted to the issues connected with the possibilities to use fables and fairy tales in language education of young children. Fables and fairy tales belong to the fixed repertoire of children’s literature. They are equally attractive to a young reader at present as they w ere m any years ago, regardless of the fact that numerous changes concern in civilization and culture are occurring in the modem world. I have prepared and conducted research among two groups of children. One of them contains preschool six-year-olds, another consists of seven-year-old first class students. The research involved three children’s literature works p resented as: a drama performance, listening to a story read by a teacher, listening to the text from an audio cassette. 1 decided to find the answers to such bothering questions: which means of communication are the most popular with children, to what a degree did the children understand the content o f fables and fairy tales and is it determined by the child ’s age or gender. Having analyzed the material obtained during the research 1 noticed that children like watching fables and fairy tales at the theatre and listening to them being read by an adult person. However, the fact that children ow e the school their first meeting with the theatre appears to be alarming. Furthermore, the collected data proves that the way in which the text is presented to the child has little influence on both understanding and possibilities to develop their language. In spite of this fact, the child ’s age appears to have the impact on the understanding degree of literary texts. There is no such a dependence in case of the gender of the children researched. For this reason, children’s vocabulary and their interest towards literature should be enriched and developed through different means of presenting fables and fairy tales to children.en_US
