Geordie - a language without an army

Abstract

This article aims at presenting the phonetic, lexical and structural differences between the variety spoken in Tyneside (North East England), known as Geordie, and Standard English; and showing that, due to the differences, communication between the users of the varieties is often impossible. This article also aims at answering the question why Geordie is usually classified as a mere dialect of English although, on linguistic grounds, it should be granted the status of a separate language
