Abstract

The colour green plays a significant role in the senile poetry of Szymborska, Hartwig, Miłosz and Różewicz. Among its meanings dominate associations with life, the eternal rhythm of nature and hope. Therefore, it shows a connection with the mental condition of an elderly94 Ewa Górecka person. Some writers accentuate its negative symbolism. Consequently, the colour has an am biguous meaning - it is visible in lyric poetry ofwriters who do not avoid displaying ugliness. This dialectics ofthe meaning of the colour green is parallel with respect to opposition ofthe basic aesthetic categories. When the colour of life changes into a sign of death the need for colours is signalled in such poetry. However, it is difficult to be satisfied. Old age does not question the multicoloured character ofthe world, but its perception.
