Abstract

The space is a universal and ambiguous concept. In a literature it is a permanent element ofthe structure which is the part ofthe depicted world. The space takes the special meaning in the city defining its cultural symbols and giving the value. The material analysis allowed to cut out the indicators which enabled the reconstruction ofthe linguistic picture ofthe city in the explored text: the picture ofthe small city (the attitude of the inhabitants to the city, the space, colours and sounds), the picture of the big city (the ugliness and sounds of the big city the space and the talk, the Mariacka Tower and the Wawel Castle as symbols universal cultural values, supermarket - the new urban space).
