Abstract

In the article an attempt has been made to indicate the value which is retained in urban toponyms of Wyrzysk. For this purpose the Polish names of streets and squares of the town in the years 1945 and 2006 and the German names in the years 1941-1942 have been semantically analyzed. The society of Wyrzysk was guided by practical considerations while giving the names to the streets. Topographical names, retaining the natural and urban objects ofthe area and also names of the towns, towards which the street led, are predominating. In Polish names respect for the history is also hidden. People of merit to the town and the country (Mikołaj and Wojciech Rydzyński, Stanisław Staszic, Tadeusz Kościuszko), the Polish Army organization and a date connected with a historical fact (22nd ofJanuary) were commemorated. In a German name of one ofthe streets Albert Forster - a member ofthe NSDAP was retained. Structural analysis of the Polish urban toponyms has shown, that in the urban nomenclature of Wyrzysk names with one-word defining clause of concession represented by an adjective are dominating.
