Abstract

The outbreak of II WW was an unquestionable turning point for the life and work of Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska. Emigration and experience connected with it affected in the long run her way of perceiving the world and the place she occupied in this world. The “I” relations change both towards the surrounding world and towards the self. External factors, independent from the will and desire, determine obviously the condition of an exile. These factors take away the freedom of choice and a chance for modifying the world according to one’s needs, they negate the ability of finding the solid elements that suppress the unrest of today. Showing the specific features of living in unfriendly reality, exposing to unpredictable actions triggering various reactions reflect the transformation and emergence of new elements of identity. The exclusion rituals which imply pursuits of successful adaptation in a new situation, redefinition of views concerning the self and the world lead to the preliminary recognition of crisis. They evoke contemplation projecting the understanding of the condition in terms of distance, loss, impermanence. The ritual allows one to recognize the vastness of experience and to embark on making order, struggle with one’s fate, with the disorder of the external world and with the solitude in this world.
