The author analyses one of the fundamental sources to the mediaeval history of Ruthenia to determine its usefulness in studying the history of material culture. Data of this kind are usually not the main subject of the chronicler’s narration, which is focused on the actions of particular rulers, but they serve to glorify princes and highlight their prestige. The fragments of the chronicle chosen by the author as significant for the history of material culture regard mostly the 13th. They convey information on sacred and lay buildings, including fortifications, interior decorations, clothes, jewellery, food, books, weapons and warriors’ other equipment, burial places and forms of commemorating the dead. Data from the chronicle can supplement the more extensive archaeological materials and help in their interpretation.en_US
