There are no facts and explicitly sounding events. In the historical short story a tradition, collective sorrow of some social group or the nation, as well as the stereotype sometimes intertwine. Unfortunately we are forced to note that so far no historian managed to describe pasts so that their image and interpretation satisfy all sides participating in the event. Describing the history of the own nation, even the most the «objective historian» has a problem with their reconstruction according to reality. The maturity of the researcher consists in expert dividing of the one «one’s» from «another person’s» of history. When the event is regarding nations neighboring oneself, then we are dealing with two looks at his course. A problem with school books is still more considerable. Authors of textbooks on history describing the event are taking the state of historical researches into consideration, but also unfortunately and current political conditioning in the state. In this article for the example let us watch one event from the history of Poland in the 17th century which influenced fates of two nations. I analyzed not only facts, but, what more essential, evaluations of one event important for Poles and Ukrainians. I put together the presentation of coming into existence of Bogdan Chmielnicki by authors of textbooks from Poland and of Ukraine.en_US
