Abstract

The disputation between Józef Tischner and Mieczysław A. Krąpiec was a disputation between subjective and objective understanding of a human being, i.e. between Cartesian tradition and Thomistic tradition. In Cartesian tradition, epistemology is taken as perspective of viewing human being, in Thomistic tradition – metaphysics. A characteristic of the disputation was regarding just one of these perspectives as appropriate. Effectively it was the disputation about exclusivity in philosophical explication of a human being. This approach does not seem to be the right one. Both of these approaches to human being are needed. They enable taking a look at a human being from the inside and outside. They do not exclude each other but they complete each other. Particularly interesting may be employing them in considerations concerning human individuality and the way of experiencing it.
