Abstract

The text is devoted to the analysis of examples of plays on words used by Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska in her letters to her husband. The source of linguistic material is a publication entitled “Maria z Kossaków Jasnorzewska. Listy do przyjaciół i korespondencja z mężem (1928-1945)” by Kazimierz Olszański (“Kossakiana” Publishing House, Kraków 1998). A play upon words is every conscious action - modification that somehow exceeds the fixed linguistic rules established in the language. A few examples of modifications were chosen: graphic, sound, inflection, word-formation and phraseology.
