This manuscript is an attempt to summarize and interpret the results of theoretical studies concerned with the mechanisms of personality change. It uses chaos theory as a framework for understanding of the mechanisms of change, describing four types of personality adaption: creative adaptation, mechanical. neurotic and passive. Personality development is understood as a type of personality change that is based on the creative adaptation mechanism, adapting the personality structure to an individuals; long range goals, rather than changes forced by the environment (mechanical or passive adaptation), or changes caused by an attempt to preserve previously developed personality structures (neurotic adaptation). The difficult task of adapting to the demands of today; world might cause development of two qualitatively different types of individuals, some being able to adapt. others being adapted the changing environment. The results of such segregation might become one of the most important problems facing us in the near future.en_US
