Abstract

In dignitary Polish families in XIX and at the beginning of the 20th century it was popular, that mothers didn’t take care of small children independently, and for the aid a special service was being employed. To new born baby were being rented wet nurses, whereas to a little bit more old- nannies. In spite of the research conducted in last years on the upbringing and home teaching children in XVIII, XIX and beginnings of the 20th century, the topic of wet nurses and nannies so far wasn’t still taken up. They exist admittedly certain, more or less extensive mentions to this topic, by the way of saying articles on home teachers, however they aren’t considering more close the problem. Therefore in hereby study I will try at least to some extent to characterize the stance of mentioned above hired powers looking children after in Polish families in the period of 1850-1914. The main problem is showing a perfect pattern of nannies and nurses, and what opinion of pedagogic columnists ruled in the analysed period about wet nurses and nannies which appeared demands, recommendations and advice concerning these hired protective powers. Source material are polish pedagogical guides for parents from XIX and of beginning of the 20th century, which sources constitute it excellent base with groups for describing the rank the scope of interesting contemporary columnists and teachers analysed being into raising a child in the examined time.
