Abstract

Form of bookbinding was changed a lot in the period 1800-1950. Technologies, materials, methods and styles of decoration were changed. These changes have been associated with the development of the publishing market (quantitative increase in publication), legal and economic conditions (freedom to conduct a business, prosperity), social changes (equality of Jews, the emancipation of women, migration artisans), technology (inventions, industrialization). The number of bookbinders grow rapidly. The activities of the most important workshop was researched, a list of all bookbinders was created.
