Streszczenie
Bydgoszcz has been called a “green city” for a long time. History, economic and cultural life of the city is closely related to the Brda River and its gardens and parks. The aim of the article is to show how nature influenced the mentality and lifestyle of Polish city residents at the beginning of the 20th century. The collective identity of Poles in Bydgoszcz is best presented by the Dziennik Bydgoski, the oldest (1907-1939) and most influential newspaper in the city. This journal conveyed to the local community: knowledge about the world, valued attitudes and various social phenomena, influenced the fashion, choice of entertainment and the way of spending free time. The image of the real relations of Bydgoszcz’s inhabitants with the nature of their city was recreated on the basis of the analysis of articles, notes and announcements in the “Dziennik Bydgoski”.The language material was presented and interpreted in two thematic circles: “the river” and “the gardens”.
