Abstract

Digital bindings collections are contemporary alternative for library files or published illustrated catalogues. Analysis of 33 collections showed diversity in their structure, functions and content. Besides the typical use of databases, based on their browsing or searching, valuable for bookbinding studies are different types of indexes, access to the rich iconography and the possibility of its use in comparative research, mechanisms enabling quotations as well. Problems arising both the distraction and difficulties in reaching the collections could be solved by placing informations about them in the planned by CERL Bookbinding Research Information Center. However, due to the lack of standards for description of objects, the integration of the databases is not possible.
