The way people deal with goals in life depends, to some degree, on the resources they have. Goals people choose and effectiveness in which they are fulfilled is related to personal resources, such as personal beliefs and tendencies to
react affectively. In the present paper the role of resources favorable for effective functioning is discussed. The newest theoretical conceptions integrating the role of diverse personal resources in seeking the common core of positive beliefs and other personality variables are indicated. Directions of the series of the author’s research investigating the role of personal resources in the process of goal realization, activity engagement, and success in action are also described.

The goal of the current study was to juxtapose the satisfaction with life and empathy along with the sense of locus of control among homeless women. We used Diener’s Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), adapted to Polish by Z. Juczyński; Rotter’s Internal-External Control Scale, Kazimierczak & Plopa’s Emphatic Sensitivity Scale (scale originally in Polish under the name Skala Wrażliwości Empatycznej, SWE), as well a questionnaire constructed by the author for the purposes of this study.
21 homeless women inhabitants of homeless shelters (Prometeusz and Monar-Markot in Gdańsk, Poland) and residential training and rehabilitation centre (Osiedle Na Sitowiu, Gdańsk, Poland) took part in the study. Results suggest a correlation between the demographic along with psychosocial factors and the assessment of satisfaction with life as well as the levels of empathy of the investigated group. Participant’s satisfaction with life was either low or very low. The empathy levels were also low. The group was characterized by average levels of sense of internal control. A relationship was observed between the levels
of satisfaction with life and the locus of control. Homeless women characterized by a higher sense of satisfaction with life had a sense of external locus of control.

The interest taken in one’s own appearance is most often studied with reference to the population of women, however over the recent years concentrating on one’s looks concerns men as well. Generally men are more satisfied with their appearance than women and physical attractiveness is not an important element of
Self for men as it is for women. 996 men, aged 18 to 29, took part in our study where we measured 1) their attitude towards their bodies with the Body Esteem Scale (Franzoi, Shields, 1984, Polish normalization by Lipowska, Lipowski, 2013), 2) the level of their narcissistic traits, examined with the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (Raskin, Hall, 1981) in Polish adaptation by Bazińska, Drat-Ruszczak, 2000). Additionally we used objective information from body measurements: weight, height and sizes of individual body parts. All that information allowed us to calculate anthropometric indices, such as body mass index (BMI), index of central
obesity (ICO), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-chest ratio (WCR). Our results show that the majority of men are satisfied with their body weight, though some of them would like to increase it by building up the musculature.
Anthropometric indices describing level of obesity and type of body shape don’t predict a participant’s body satisfaction. The level of narcissism proved to be essential predictor of satisfaction with one’s own physical appearance, but only among men taking up activity aimed towards the correction of body weight. Higher level
of narcissistic traits was related to higher focus on one’s appearance, more positive attitude towards body and higher involvement in losing weight or “building” muscles.

The paper presents empirical study which attempts to explain the relationships between employees’ organizational commitment and their initiation of trainings. Initiation of training activity can be understood as a goal realization process and explained by using goal theories. Three phases of the process are analyzed: intention to undertake training, plan formulation, and actual training participation. Data from 202 employees were collected in a 3-month two-wave study. The findings show that each of the three dimensions of organizational commitment demonstrates different relationships with the phases of training initiation process. Continuance commitment is negatively, however weakly, correlated with all three phases of the process, normative commitment is unrelated, and affective commitment is positively correlated with intention to undertake training in the group of
employees with less seniority. Organization size and employee seniority are significant moderators of some of analysed relationships.
